Area cyclists showed their support for Habitat for Humanity of Martin County’s Women Build program at the inaugural Power Ride, a cycling poker ride that took place April 30 at Village Bike Shop in Hobe Sound.
The event raised more than $7,900 for Habitat’s 2011
Women Build home in Hobe Sound, built for Shameeka Dixon and her 5-year-old
twin boys.
The family-friendly event consisted of a 7 a.m. 62-mile "Hammer Down” ride; an 8 a.m. 35-mile "Flying Trusses” ride; and a 9 a.m. 10-mile "Building Blocks” family fun ride. Barry Grant Marsh of BGM Creative served as event emcee and Joe Horvath acted as poker dealer. A variety of activities were available throughout the morning, including a bike safety program hosted by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, and Lowe’s hosted a building clinic for children.
Prizes
were awarded for best poker hand, including two Trek beach cruisers, which went
to Hillary Gropp.
Special recognition goes to BankAtlantic, Gulfstream Bank, Trek, Seacoast National Bank, Total Quality Services, Eleanor Guernsey/Cynthia Daugherty, Proctor, Crook, Crowder, & Fogal, Sea Change Foundation, Rines IGA Market and Village Bike Shop for sponsoring this event.

About Women Build
The 2011 Habitat for Humanity of Martin County Women Build home will be built for Shameeka Dixon and her twin 5-year-old boys in the Hobe Sound community of Banner Lake. Construction began in January and Dixon is contributing to Habitat’s sweat equity requirement of 300 volunteer hours. She’ll purchase the home with a no-profit loan and her monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat homes. Construction will conclude in May and Habitat will present the keys to Dixon in time for Mother’s Day.
Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program that encourages women and girls to have fun and make a difference by building homes and communities. Women crews around the world have built thousands of homes since Women Build’s official creation in 1998. Each year, more homes are added as affiliates, donors and sponsors discover the impact of women volunteers and their resources.
